나무, 숲을 보다

He lived with the Eskimos.
He became an honorary Sioux Indian.
He lived in a commune of anarchists.
He joined the Communist Party.
He worked on the railroad.
He was a fixture at anti-nuke and peace demonstrations.
He fed the homeless and handed out free needles to curb AIDS.
And, oh, he was an anthropology professor at San Francisco State. And, he won a Grammy.
Luis Kemnitzer seemingly lived many lifetimes worth of lives. They all ended Friday at age 77.

언젠가 내게도 그날이 왔을 때,
나의 삶과 죽음은 몇줄로 요약되어질 수 있을까?
그런 생각을 했다.
너른 나무가 일하게 될 학교에서 그가 있었다니
그가 조금 더 오래 살아,
너른 나무에게 큰 배움을 줄 수 있었더라면 하는
황당한 생각도 함께 했다.
